A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island, the US Geological Survey says.

A large earthquake has rocked New Zealand’s North Island but no damage has been reported.

The long, rumbling 6.5-magnitude quake struck around 2035 AEST, 60km southwest of Opunake in Taranaki at depth of 257km, GNS Science said.

A Fire Service central communications spokesman told AAP there were a number of calls but no reports of damage.

The quake was felt hundreds of kilometres away in Christchurch.
